Winter is a time for cozy nights by the fire, hot cocoa, and spending quality time indoors. Unfortunately, it’s also the season when pests like rodents, spiders, and cockroaches seek shelter in your home. The cold weather drives them inside, and once they’re in, they can be difficult to remove. But don’t worry—we’ve got you covered with 10 proven tips to keep your home pest-free this winter.
1. Seal Entry Points
Pests can squeeze through the tiniest cracks and gaps. Inspect your home for openings around doors, windows, pipes, and foundations. Use caulk, weatherstripping, or steel wool to seal these gaps and prevent pests from entering. Pay special attention to areas where utility lines enter your home, as these are common entry points for rodents and insects.
2. Store Food Properly
Pests are always on the hunt for food. Store pantry items like cereals, grains, and pet food in airtight containers. Avoid leaving food out on counters, and clean up crumbs and spills immediately. Don’t forget about pet food—store it in sealed containers and avoid leaving it out overnight.
3. Declutter Your Space
Clutter provides the perfect hiding spot for pests. Organize storage areas like basements, attics, and garages. Dispose of old boxes, papers, and unused items that could attract pests. Rodents, in particular, love to nest in cardboard boxes and piles of paper.
4. Inspect for Early Signs
Regularly check for signs of pests, such as droppings, chewed wires, or nests. Early detection can prevent a small problem from becoming a full-blown infestation. Look for signs of activity in dark, secluded areas like under sinks, behind appliances, and in closets.
5. Fix Leaks and Reduce Moisture
Many pests, like cockroaches and silverfish, thrive in damp environments. Fix leaky pipes, clean gutters, and use a dehumidifier in basements to reduce moisture levels. Don’t forget to check for standing water in places like plant saucers and clogged drains.
6. Maintain Your Yard
Overgrown bushes, fallen leaves, and woodpiles near your home can attract pests. Keep your yard tidy, trim vegetation, and store firewood at least 20 feet away from your house. Pests like rodents and ants often use overgrown plants as a bridge to enter your home.
7. Install Screens and Door Sweeps
Ensure all windows and vents have tight-fitting screens. Install door sweeps to block gaps under doors, which are common entry points for pests. This is especially important for sliding glass doors and basement entrances.
8. Dispose of Garbage Regularly
Pests love garbage! Use trash cans with tight-fitting lids and take out the garbage regularly. Clean your bins to remove food residue and odours. If possible, store garbage cans away from your home.
9. Use Natural Repellents
Certain scents, like peppermint oil, can deter pests. Place cotton balls soaked in peppermint oil near entry points or use diatomaceous earth to repel insects. While natural repellents can be effective, they are not a substitute for professional pest control.
10. Call the Professionals
If you notice signs of an infestation or want to prevent one, it’s time to call in the experts. DIY methods often provide only temporary relief, while professional pest control offers long-term solutions. A professional pest control company can identify the root cause of the problem and implement targeted treatments.
