Pests are sneaky invaders that can cause damage to your home and pose health risks to your family. But before you can tackle a pest problem, you need to know what you’re dealing with. In this guide, we’ll help you identify the most common household pests and understand their behavior.

Ants

  • Signs: Trails of ants, small piles of dirt or sand, or discarded wings.

  • Behavior: Ants are attracted to food and water. They often enter homes through cracks and gaps. Common species include carpenter ants, which can damage wood, and odorous house ants, which emit a foul smell when crushed.

  • Prevention Tips: Seal entry points, clean up spills, and store food in airtight containers.

Cockroaches

  • Signs: Droppings that resemble coffee grounds, a musty odor, or sightings of live roaches (especially at night).

  • Behavior: Cockroaches thrive in warm, damp areas like kitchens and bathrooms. They are nocturnal and can spread diseases like salmonella and E. coli.

  • Prevention Tips: Fix leaks, clean thoroughly, and dispose of garbage regularly.

Rodents (Mice and Rats)

  • Signs: Droppings, gnaw marks, scratching noises, or nests made of shredded paper or fabric.

  • Behavior: Rodents are excellent climbers and can squeeze through tiny openings. They can contaminate food and spread diseases like hantavirus and leptospirosis.

  • Prevention Tips: Seal entry points, store food securely, and maintain cleanliness.

Bed Bugs

  • Signs: Small red bites on your skin, blood stains on sheets, or tiny dark spots (fecal matter) on mattresses.

  • Behavior: Bed bugs hide in cracks, crevices, and furniture, emerging at night to feed. They are often brought into homes through luggage or used furniture.

  • Prevention Tips: Inspect second-hand furniture and luggage after traveling.

Spiders

  • Signs: Webs in corners, basements, or garages, or sightings of spiders.

  • Behavior: Most spiders are harmless, but some species, like the black widow, can be dangerous. Spiders are attracted to other insects, so reducing pest populations can help keep them away.

  • Prevention Tips: Keep your home clean and clutter-free.
